META Sold Your Private Messages | Samsung Cooks Apple | Google Gives More Insights

❤️ What We Liked

A class-action lawsuit in the United States accuses Facebook of allowing Netflix to access users' private messages. That’s right, both META and Netflix have now read that drunken rant you went on about your ex to your bestie on Saturday night.

The lawsuit, alleges that Facebook's parent company Meta had a "special relationship" with Netflix, sharing user data in exchange for millions in ad revenue. The lawsuit, which became public in March 2024, claims that since 2017, Netflix has spent $150 million on Facebook ads and received bespoke access to private Facebook APIs, enhancing Netflix’s targeted ads and content.

When will META and Netflix be in the news for doing something positive? When pigs fly.

📌 What We Saved

Next up: what we saved. At Content Smith, we love a bit of competitive marketing. It makes advertising fun and spicy and keeps marketers on their metaphorical toes.
In a Kendrick vs. Drake move, Samsung has hit the ball—or should we say apple?—into Apple’s court.

This Samsung ad takes a direct hit at Apple for not having slow-motion capture on their phones. The playful piece of marketing even features an actual apple as the subject.

Checkmate, Apple.

📮 What We Shared

Google seems to have answered eCommerce owners’ prayers, according to this DTC.
Google is rolling out a major update to give eCommerce owners more insights into their product listing performance across Google Shopping.

Merchants can now track performance via the Google Search Image tab, seeing key metrics like impressions and clicks for the first time. The latest DTC Newsletter explains how you can access the latest feature.

How to find the new report:

  1. Go to the Shopping tab on the navigation bar

  2. Select Google Search Image Tab

  3. Select Performance to see the report and more insights into merchant listings

Google hopes this will help e-commerce owners understand which particular images drive clicks. We love that Google is listening to business owners’ needs, and is giving them more data on product visibility.

Understanding data is crucial for shaping your content and strategy. Curious about why? Just hit reply, and we’ll gladly explain.
